Broadband

What is broadband?

Broadband is a high-speed connection to the Internet that is 'always on'. Broadband has a much larger capacity to receive and send data than a standard 56k or narrowband connection (hence the name 'broadband'). Broadband can be up to 10 times quicker at accessing internet media then when using a 56k connection.

Broadband uses a technology called ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line). ADSL transforms your existing telephone line into a high-speed digital line capable of carrying the high-speed broadband service.

What are the benefits of broadband?

A broadband internet connection is always on, so you don't need to dial up every time you want to view a website or collect your emails. You can even make and receive phone calls while still connected to the internet.

Because broadband internet is much faster then a normal 56k internet connection, you can do things like watch videos and play games over the internet, virtually impossible on a normal dial-up connection.

What do I need to use broadband internet?

To connect to the internet through a broadband connection you need a computer that meets the minimum requirements for broadband plus the following:

● A broadband modem – this allows your computer to connect to the internet via a broadband connection.

● Microfilters – these filter out the broadband signal used to connect to the internet from the normal phone signal, allowing you to use the phone and the internet at the same time.

Depending on your chosen broadband supplier, the broadband modem may be supplied free of charge. Some broadband suppliers also offer you the choice of installing the equipment yourself to cut costs, or having an engineer install it for you.

Will my computer be at risk from viruses?

A high speed connection that is always on will put your computer at a even greater risk from viruses then a dial up connection, it is therefore essential to install Antivirus software on any computer that has internet access to protect it from viruses.
